Foundational Years

The Foundational Years mark the beginning of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) at The Vale School Muthaiga. Here, children move from play-based inquiry into more structured learning, developing critical thinking, independence and collaboration. These years provide the solid base every child needs to grow academically, socially and emotionally.

Diamonds (3 – 4 years)

Diamonds is where the Primary Years Programme (PYP) begins. At this stage, children are encouraged to explore their world through inquiry-based, play-led experiences. Teachers guide curiosity with open-ended questions, helping children connect ideas and develop early problem-solving skills.

Outdoor learning and sensory exploration remain central, giving children the chance to experiment and build resilience. Early literacy and numeracy are introduced naturally through stories, games and everyday experiences. Diamonds sets the foundation for confident, joyful learners who are ready to take on new challenges.

Stars

Stars (4 – 5 years)

In Stars, children build on the confidence and curiosity developed in Diamonds. Lessons are designed to strengthen early literacy and numeracy, while also encouraging collaboration and independent thinking. Through hands-on inquiry, children explore science, nature and creative arts in ways that connect to their own experiences. Outdoor play and group projects help them develop social skills and a sense of responsibility.

This class strikes a balance between guided instruction and child-led exploration, ensuring that each learner grows at their own pace while being prepared for the next step.

Comets (5 – 6 years)

The Comets year brings a deeper level of inquiry and collaboration. Children begin to engage with more structured learning, applying critical thinking to solve problems and make connections across subjects. Through interactive projects, students build stronger language and numeracy skills while experiencing meaningful learning.

Group investigations encourage teamwork, while individual tasks build independence. Outdoor learning and creative arts are woven into the programme, ensuring a well-rounded experience. Learners develop resilience and curiosity, ready to embrace the next stage.

Sunbeams

Sunbeams (6 – 7 years)

Sunbeams marks the consolidation of the Foundational Years, where students refine their skills and independence. Inquiry based projects encourage them to take ownership of their learning, asking questions and pursuing answers with confidence. Academic foundations in literacy and numeracy are strengthened through engaging in real-world contexts.

Social and emotional development is equally emphasised, with a focus on empathy, kindness and collaboration. Learners begin to think more critically, take on leadership roles and reflect on their learning journey. This stage prepares them for the transition into the next level of primary education with assurance and enthusiasm.
